  R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services, a specialized dismantling, rigging and demolition contractor, commenced a very technical selective demolition and rigging project at an active petrochemical facility in New Jersey. The multi-national petrochemical company selected R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services (R. Baker & Son) based on their impeccable safety record, past successful project completion’s at the facility and their unique approach to the project.
The basic scope of work includes the total demolition of a unit within the active facility. Specifically, R. Baker & Son is tasked with the dismantlement and selective demolition of two (2) — 300-foot towers, a 160-feet tall X 16-feet diameter column, tubed heat exchangers, tanks, boilers, cooling tower, rail loading equipment and other vessels, pumps and associated piping and steel work.
Due to the close proximity to active lines and equipment, R. Baker & Son will need to create numerous air gaps in order to separate the active areas from the areas to be dismantled. A combination of manual cutting (hot and cold cutting) and use of excavators with shears will be necessary.
Several cranes will be utilized to safely dismantle the high towers and column. A Demag AC 500-1 with a superlift, a 120-ton Grove, a 190-ton crane and a 100-ton with manbasket.
The project is anticipated to be completed in early November 2009. A follow up article will be developed at that time to detail project specifics.
  R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services is the premier specialized contractor for dismantlement, decommissioning and demolition in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The veteran owned company has been in business since 1935, has over 100 employees, an exemplary safety record (We have been directly involved in four (4) sites that received VPP OSHA Safety Awards) and is financially strong (bonding capabilities over $10 Million).
